What you should and shouldn't do during a divorce

There are some simple steps that people who are going through a divorce can take to improve the process. There are also some missteps they can avoid during the process that will bolster their chances in the divorce.

So what sorts of actions and traps are we talking about here? Let's take a look at a bunch of them so that you can be better prepared during a divorce:

  • First, if you have children, then make sure you support them throughout the process. They are going to need your guidance and love throughout the divorce.
  • You also need to be truthful with your soon-to-be-former spouse. Don't lie about your assets or financial holdings. If you lie about it, it could come back to bite you later on.
  • Also, be reasonable with your spouse during the divorce. This doesn't mean you have to acquiesce to everything -- but you should be open to negotiation. If you are stubborn about everything, then it is likely that the divorce will take longer, be more stressful and involve more arguments than is necessary.
  • Avoid making any big life changes during a divorce. For example, you shouldn't plan on buying a home, or moving to a different state, or taking a new job. All of these things could greatly complicate your divorce during a critical time.
  • Last but not least, don't go it alone. Consult with an experienced family law attorney to help you during your divorce.
